North Korea test launched Intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong 18, threat to US
North Korea launched a ballistic missile on Wednesday that flew for more than 70 minutes. This was a Hwasong-18 missile, which could lead to increased tensions with the United States and its allies. This missile test lasted slightly longer than previous ones conducted by North Korea earlier this year in March and April.
Capability to reach the United States
The latest missile and those that were launched earlier this year are intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the United States.
The missile launched on Wednesday landed in waters near Japan. North Korea had previously threatened to shoot down US military reconnaissance aircraft near its territory, accusing them of engaging in “hostile espionage” activities.
The Hwasong-18 is a type of solid-fuel missile, which is harder to detect and intercept compared to North Korea’s other liquid-fuel ICBMs. It was first tested in April. Experts believe that the Hwasong-18 could allow North Korea to launch long-range nuclear strikes more quickly and easily as they continue to develop their missile programme.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the test-fire of the Hwasong-18, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Thursday.
