US Soldier Travis King to Be Deported by North Korea
US soldier Travis King returned to US custody after crossing North Korean border
Travis King, a former US soldier with a history of service in South Korea, made headlines when he rapidly crossed the border into North Korea on July 18 during a civilian visit to a border village. This bold move made him the first American to be detained in North Korea in nearly five years. North Korean officials announced that King had confessed to entering the country illegally due to his “ill feelings against inhumane mistreatment and racial discrimination” within the U.S. military and disillusionment with unequal aspects of American society. As a result, North Korea decided to expel the King.
Return to US custody
Following North Korea’s decision, Travis King was transferred to US custody in China. However, the time and place of his expulsion from North Korea is unknown. Claudine Gates, Travis King’s mother, expressed her belief that her son had compelling reasons to return to the United States, where he has family.
Crossing rare limits
Unauthorized border crossings into the demilitarized zone are exceptionally rare in North Korea, with the exception usually being made by soldiers, missionaries, human rights advocates, or people simply curious about the secretive nation. Travis King’s case has received international attention due to its unique circumstances.
