China’s drill near Taiwan aimed at sending Strong Message Against Separatist Ambitions

China’s military exercises aim to counter Taiwan’s independence sentiments

In a recent announcement, China has declared that its ongoing military activities around Taiwan are to “fight the arrogance” of those it accuses of advocating separatism. Beijing continues to assert its claim to Taiwan, calling it an integral part of its territory and leaving open the possibility of using force to achieve reunification.

China has consistently described Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as “separatists”. This accusation has triggered international isolation efforts against Taiwan, which intensify whenever President Tsai interacts with leading US politicians.

Increasing military activities

Taiwan has reported an increase in China’s military activities near its borders in recent weeks. These activities include fighter jet incursions, drone flights, warship presence and deployment of the aircraft carrier Shandong. Land exercises have also been conducted off China’s east coast, closest to Taiwan.

In response to inquiries about these military exercises, Zhu Fenglian, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, revealed that the People’s Liberation Army had conducted a series of exercises. The primary objective, according to Zhu, is to confront “the arrogance of Taiwan independence separatist forces” and their pursuit of independence.

Taiwan’s response and submarine launch

Taiwan’s government has reiterated that only the island’s people should decide their future and has repeatedly proposed negotiations with China, which Beijing has rejected. Recent days have seen an increase in Chinese military incursions into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone.

In response, Taiwan is set to launch the first of eight domestically built submarines to boost its defense capabilities. These actions underscore Taiwan’s commitment to modernizing its military to counter potential threats from China. The development follows Taiwan’s Defense Ministry’s decision to monitor Chinese exercises in Fujian province, located opposite Taiwan, reflecting the region’s growing concerns over rising tensions.
