Justin Trudeau Stirs Controversy as Pro-Nazi Figure Receives Hero’s Welcome in Canadian Parliament

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing intense criticism after a 98-year-old man who served in a Nazi unit during World War II was given a standing ovation in the House of Commons last week. The man in question, Yaroslav Hanka, was revered as a war hero who fought with the 1st Ukrainian Division.

Speaker Anthony Rota initially praised Hunka as “a Ukrainian hero and a Canadian hero”, but later issued an apology after a Jewish human rights group revealed Hunka’s affiliation with a Nazi unit. Rota reported that neither his fellow parliament members nor the Ukraine delegation were aware of his plans to recognize Hunka.

Opposition points fingers at Trudeau

The opposition, led by Pierre Poilievre, blamed Justin Trudeau for the incident and accused him of personally meeting Hunka and honoring him. Poilievre criticized Trudeau for not properly vetting guests and not preparing a schedule for state visits, calling it a “catastrophic error in judgment.”

The Jewish human rights group, Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, demanded an apology for the incident and an explanation of how Hunka gained access to the parliament. He emphasized the troubling nature of honoring someone with ties to the Nazis at a time of rising anti-Semitism.

Russia demands an apology

Russia also waded into the fray, with its ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, announcing plans to send a letter to Trudeau and a note to the Canadian Foreign Ministry. The Russian government sought clarification regarding the controversy surrounding Hunka’s recognition in the Canadian Parliament.
