Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seeks answers from India on Sikh separatist killing case

Amid rising tensions between Canada and India, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reiterated his stance of not wanting to “provoke” India or escalate tensions, but New Delhi takes the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar with “extreme seriousness”. Trudeau had earlier created controversy in June by alleging the involvement of “agents of the Indian government” in Nijjar’s murder, which drew concern from the US. “We are not trying to provoke or escalate. We want to work with the Indian government to clarify everything and ensure due process,” he said at a press conference.

In a House of Commons speech, Trudeau emphasized that Canadian security agencies are actively investigating credible allegations linking Indian government agents to the murder. India has strongly denied these claims and described them as “absurd and motivated”.

Deteriorating Relationships

Following discussions between Trudeau and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 summit, Canada and India mutually expelled senior diplomats, widening the diplomatic rift. Trade talks between the two countries have been affected, with the issue arising from concerns over Sikh extremism in Canada.
