Heavy overnight rains create flood-like situation in New York

After a night of continuous rain, severe flooding occurred in parts of New York City, causing disruption to important transportation hubs. One terminal at LaGuardia Airport was closed due to flooding. Disturbing images on social media show passengers wading through ankle-deep water.

With impassable roads and submerged subway stations, Mayor Eric Adams issued a warning to residents to stay indoors. Commuters faced a nightmare scenario, with some subway lines inoperable, making travel across the city exceptionally challenging. Videos circulating online showed partially submerged cars and massive traffic congestion, with major roadways disrupted. Owners of flooded shops struggled to protect their merchandise and wade water from streets.

Declaration of emergency

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City and surrounding areas, including Long Island and the Hudson River Valley. The National Weather Service continues to issue flood warnings, with possible hourly rainfall rates of up to two inches and cumulative daily totals of up to seven inches.

The Metro, the lifeline of millions of people, suffered massive damage as water started pouring down the stairs and entered the roofs of the station. Several lines, including Brooklyn, were temporarily closed.

Community assistance is underway

The New York State Thruway Authority, acknowledging the impact of flooding on neighboring areas, stepped in to assist communities affected by the ramp closures. The situation remains fluid, with residents urged to exercise caution as the city grapples with the aftermath of this intense rainfall event.
