Nobel Medicine Prize Awarded to mRNA Pioneers Catalin Carico and Drew Weissman

Caitlin Carico and Drew Weissman have been honored with the Nobel Medicine Prize for their groundbreaking work on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, marking an unprecedented acknowledgement of extraordinary scientific accomplishment. Their research, conducted in 2005, played a key role in the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines, a departure from the Nobel Committee’s tradition of rewarding older research.

Kariko, from Hungary, and Weissman, from the United States, have been longtime colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania. Their innovative mRNA technology served as the foundation for the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, which have transformed the global response to the pandemic. Unlike traditional vaccines, mRNA vaccines provide genetic instructions to cells, simulating infection and training the immune system.

A legacy beyond COVID-19: future applications

Beyond the pandemic, Kariko and Weisman’s work has far-reaching implications. Their mRNA technology is being leveraged to develop treatments for a variety of diseases, including cancer, influenza, and heart failure. The Nobel Committee recognizes the profound impact of his research on the well-being of humanity.

Kariko and Weissmann will be formally awarded the Nobel Prize, along with a diploma, a gold medal and a $1 million prize, at a ceremony in Stockholm on December 10 to commemorate the legacy of Alfred Nobel. As Nobel season continues, the world is eagerly awaiting announcements in physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics with hopes of increasing diversity and recognizing global challenges like climate change.
