Quad Foreign Ministers Unite for Indo-Pacific Stability and Sovereignty

In a significant development, the foreign ministers of the Quad countriesAustralia, India, Japan and the United States – met in New York on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Their joint statement reiterated their unwavering commitment to promote a “free and open Indo-Pacific” characterized by peace, prosperity, stability and security, devoid of coercion and disputes resolved through international law. .

Advancing the Quad Initiative

The meeting mainly focused on reaffirming common goals and assessing the progress of existing Quad initiatives. The Ministers pledged to take forward the initiatives launched in Hiroshima, including collaborative efforts on climate change, clean energy supply chains, infrastructure development through programs such as the Quad Infrastructure Fellowship and the Quad Partnership for Cable Connectivity and Resilience . Efforts to establish a secure telecommunications network, sharing Earth observation data to monitor extreme weather events and support for climate adaptation were also on the agenda. The Quad Investors Network was supported to facilitate investment in critical technologies, while a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief working group will enhance regional disaster response readiness.

Global Crisis Management

Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness was discussed as a means to help regional countries combat illicit maritime activities and tackle climate-related challenges. The ministers participated in talks related to ongoing geopolitical crises, including conflicts in Ukraine and Myanmar and North Korea’s ballistic missile launches, underscoring the Quad’s role in addressing global challenges.

This Quad meeting underlines the group’s commitment to strengthening regional stability and promoting cooperation across various domains, which play a key role in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific region.
