Key talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden set the stage for the G20 Summit in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held important discussions with US President Joe Biden in the heart of New Delhi. A statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) revealed that while a number of topics were on the table during their meeting, hopes were high that these deliberations would strengthen ties between India and the United States.

President Biden’s presence in India is primarily linked to the G20 summit, where he seeks to enhance the influence of the United States, especially in light of the absence of Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. The White House confirmed his intention to engage in sideline talks with other leaders during the summit.

Foreign heads of state and dignitaries stayed in New Delhi throughout the day as preparations for the upcoming G-20 summit at the ‘Bharat Mandapam‘ from September 9 to 10 gathered pace. More than 30 heads of state, high-ranking officials of the European Union, invited guest countries and heads of 14 international organizations are scheduled to participate in the summit.

Key Absences at G-20 Summit

Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit, which is in line with his recent absence from international gatherings since the Ukraine crisis unfolded. In addition, Chinese President Xi Jinping will be absent from the G-20 summit for the first time, although China has not officially disclosed the reasons behind this decision. Nevertheless, China has expressed willingness to cooperate with all participants in the summit.

Security measures tightened in New Delhi

In response to the summit and heightened security concerns, New Delhi has increased security measures and imposed travel restrictions in the city’s central area from Thursday night to Sunday. This designated area is called the “Controlled Zone“, emphasizing the need for increased security during this important international event.
