Nagorno-Karabakh on the Brink of Disaster, Azerbaijan Denies Ethnic Cleansing Allegations

Uncertainty looms in Nagorno-Karabakh as Azerbaijan rejects fears of ethnic cleansing

In just 24 hours, Azerbaijani forces surrendered Nagorno-Karabakh, home to 120,000 ethnic Armenians. The fate of the people in this South Caucasus enclave has become a growing concern. Despite assurances from Azerbaijan, ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh remain concerned about their future, including the possibility of forced displacement.

A painful history

Due to decades of conflict in the region, trust remains elusive. Thousands have lost their lives in previous wars, and the recent military offensive has further compounded the trauma. As the Lachin Corridor, the only route into Armenia, becomes critical, it is estimated that up to 110,000 people may be affected, despite Azerbaijan’s claim of 50,000. Some have sought refuge from Russian peacekeepers.

The involvement of international groups and Azerbaijan’s image in the West could prevent a deadly exodus. Azerbaijan emphasizes “re-integration” of ethnic Armenians into society and rejects claims of ethnic cleansing.

An uncertain future

As Azerbaijani forces position themselves on the outskirts of the regional capital, security guarantees and international attention remain vital. The local population’s dependence on Azerbaijani promises raises questions about their future in the region. While some people remain optimistic about unification, skepticism is widespread among the local population. Many fear that they will be wiped out from their home area.

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh remains volatile, with the future of its residents uncertain. International efforts and diplomatic negotiations will play a key role in determining the region’s stability and its people’s fate.
