Ukrainian missile attack hits Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Crimea

In the recent escalation of hostilities in Crimea, a Ukrainian missile struck Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters, resulting in at least one casualty and a fire. The incident marks the latest attack by Kiev on the annexed peninsula. Ukraine has been targeting Crimea since the Russian invasion began, intensifying recently as the Ukrainian government has vowed to reclaim the territory, which Russia annexed in 2014. Mikhail Razvozhayev, the governor of Sevastopol, Crimea’s largest city, confirmed the missile attack on social media. He warned residents to stay away from the impact site and urged people to stay indoors, warning of the possibility of another airstrike.

Rescuers were immediately dispatched to the scene, firefighters were working diligently to extinguish the fire. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported one soldier killed and claimed to have intercepted five missiles from air defense systems.

Increasing tension

The increase in the frequency of Ukrainian and Russian attacks in the Black Sea region comes after Russia withdrew from an agreement that allowed safe passage for civilian cargo ships through three Ukrainian ports. Ukraine is seeking long-range missiles from its allies to target locations within Russian-controlled territory. Despite concerns over potential escalation, France and the United Kingdom have supplied arms to Ukraine. As part of its ongoing offensive on Crimea, Ukraine recently targeted a military airfield near Saki that was housing warplanes and missile defense systems.

Ukraine had earlier targeted the bridge linking Crimea to the Russian mainland, disrupting both civilian and military transport. Russian authorities temporarily halted traffic on the bridge in response to the latest attack. Civilian maritime traffic in Sevastopol was also suspended. The conflict in Crimea continues to escalate, with both sides engaged in strategic attacks and counter-attacks. Russia reported the interception of guided missiles and drones targeting the peninsula. The situation remains tense as international leaders deal with this volatile crisis.
