Maldives President-elect’s Bold Pledge: Immediate Action to Remove Indian Troops from the Island

Newly elected President of Maldives vows to remove foreign troops

Maldives’ newly elected President Mohammed Muizzu has made a key promise to end foreign military presence in his country. Although he did not explicitly mention India (the country with the only foreign military deployment in Maldives) yet his statement has raised questions.

“We will send back the military forces based in Maldives as per the law and of course we will do so accordingly,” said Muizzoo, who is affiliated with former President Abdulla Yameen.

Political change in Maldives

The move comes after outgoing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reshaped Maldives’ relations with India to move away from China’s influence. Muizzoo’s political ally Yameen had earlier drawn the Maldives closer to China by securing substantial Chinese investment in infrastructure projects. Muizzu’s victory also led to Yameen’s release from jail, where he was serving an 11-year sentence and was put under house arrest.

Pro-Maldives stance

Despite the media describing him as pro-China, Muizzu clarified his priorities, saying, “My top priority will be the Maldives and its situation. We will choose to be pro-Maldives. Any country that respects our pro-Maldives policy will be considered a close friend of Maldives.”

International Responses to Muizzu’s Victory

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Muizzu, expressing India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. China also congratulated the Maldives, stressing its respect for the choices of the people of Maldives and its willingness to deepen cooperation.

Strategic Location

The Maldives, consisting of atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, sit along the vital east-west shipping lanes, making it strategically important in the region. Muizzu’s presidency introduces a new dynamism to the Maldives’ foreign relations, and the world is watching closely to see what impact it will have on the geopolitical landscape in the Indian Ocean.
