Pro-China leader Mohammed Muizzu wins Maldives presidential election

In a significant election result, pro-China leader Mohammed Muizzu has emerged victorious in the Maldives presidential election defeating incumbent Mohammed Solih. The election necessitated a runoff after no candidate achieved a clear victory in the initial round.

Change in geopolitical dynamics

Muizzu, a 45-year-old British-educated civil engineer, leads a party that oversaw a significant influx of Chinese loans during its previous term in power. Their victory signals a change in the geopolitical dynamics of the Indian Ocean with implications for the region’s alliances. Under Muizzu’s leadership, the Maldives advanced Chinese-funded infrastructure projects, including a $200 million bridge connecting the capital to the main airport. He campaigned on reducing India’s political and economic influence in the Maldives while emphasizing rapprochement with China.

Geopolitical Realignment: Maldives’ Future with China and India

Muizzu has also promised to pardon his mentor, former President Abdulla Yameen, who is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence on a remote island. Yameen played an important role in connecting Maldives with China through the Belt and Road Initiative. Muizzu’s election marks a significant reversal of fortunes for Solih, who won a landslide victory in the 2018 election amid concerns over human rights abuses and corruption under his predecessor.

The election result sets the stage for a potentially recalibrated geopolitical landscape in the Indian Ocean region, with the Maldives poised for closer ties with China under Muizzu’s leadership. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Muizzu on his election victory. He stressed India’s commitment to strengthening the long-standing India-Maldives bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
