China and Nepal have strengthened their bilateral relations by signing more than ten agreements including seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). These agreements covering various sectors such as trade, road connectivity and information technology were reached during wide-ranging talks in Beijing between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as “Prachanda”.

Strengthening bilateral relations

During their meeting, both the leaders expressed satisfaction over the close and cordial relations between the two countries. They discussed ways to further strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation, especially in the fields of economy, trade and people-to-people contacts. The talks follow Prachanda’s recent talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Hangzhou during the Asian Games.

The agreements signed included an MoU on cooperation between the National Planning Commission of Nepal and the National Development and Reform Commission of China, an MoU on enhancing digital economy cooperation and an MoU related to green and low-carbon development. The two countries also signed an MoU on agriculture, livestock and fisheries cooperation.

Infrastructure and Energy Projects

China and Nepal sealed agreements on projects such as the Hilsa-Simkot Road Project and the Nepal-China Power Grid Interconnection Project (Chilime-Kerung), highlighting their commitment to promoting connectivity and energy cooperation. They also promised cooperation in science, technology, innovation and human resource development. Prime Minister Prachanda met Chairman of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji to further broaden the historical ties between Nepal and China. They discussed promoting high-level visits and enhancing mutual cooperation.

Prime Minister Prachanda’s visit to China follows his recent attendance at the 78th UN General Assembly in New York, demonstrating Nepal’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and regional cooperation.
