Kerala EX – CM Oommen Chandy dies at 79

Kerala EX – CM Oommen Chandy dies at 79 ; Two time Chief Minister of Kerala

Former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at the age of 79. Chandy was undergoing treatment in Bengaluru for the past few months for cancer. The Kerala government has declared a two-day mourning period as well as a public holiday on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the former chief minister.

Oommen Chandy was a respected Indian politician who served as the chief minister of Kerala. He held this position from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2016. He was also the leader of the opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2011.

Mr. Chandy represented the Puthuppally constituency as a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the State Assembly for a very long time, from 1970 until his demise. He had the honour of being the longest-serving MLA in the history of the Kerala Legislative Assembly and the longest-serving MLA in the entire country of India.

Prime Minister and various other political leaders pay tribute to former Kerala CM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of former Kerala CM via a tweet, he wrote, “In the passing away of Shri Oommen Chandy Ji, we have lost a humble and dedicated leader who devoted his life to public service and worked towards the progress of Kerala. I recall my various interactions with him, particularly when we both served as Chief Ministers of our respective states, and later when I moved to Delhi. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this sorrowful hour. May his soul rest in peace.”
