India’s Shocking Move – No More Laptops and Tablets Allowed!

On Thursday, the Indian government banned the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs and small computers with immediate effect. From now on, any business or company wishing to sell laptops and computers in India will have to obtain permission or license from the government for their shipments. The decision was informed by a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Reason behind the decision

The government took this decision to encourage the manufacturing of laptops, tablets and computers in India. They want to promote local production, so they introduced the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware.

One of the main reasons behind this move is to limit imports from countries like China and Korea. The Government believes that some of these products may have security issues, that pose a threat to the safety of citizens. They are concerned that some hardware may compromise sensitive or personal data.

Implications – Laptop price might increase

The government wants to support domestic manufacturing and ensure the safety of citizens by controlling the import of these products from other countries. Apple MacBook and Lenovo laptop prices may increase. New import restrictions on laptops may lead to a laptop shortage in the market. When there is limited supply and high demand, prices usually go up. So, in the coming days, you might see higher prices for the laptops that are currently available in the market.
