India Greenlights Massive 75,000 Tons of Non-Basmati White Rice Exports to UAE via NCEL

The Government of India has announced its decision to allow export of 75,000 tonnes of non-Basmati white rice to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL), As revealed by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

While exports of non-Basmati white rice were temporarily banned on July 20 to boost domestic supplies, relaxations are being made to meet food safety requirements and at specific requests from other countries. In August, permission was given for export of 1.43 lakh tonnes to Bhutan, Mauritius and Singapore.

Global impact and rising prices

The move comes at a time when the United Nations has raised concerns over India’s rice export ban, which has pushed up global rice prices. The rising prices are raising concerns about food security in Asia and Africa, where rice is a staple of the diets of billions of people. India’s role as a major global rice trader, accounting for about 40 percent of global rice trade in recent years, gives this decision paramount importance. As rice prices hit their highest level in nearly 15 years, the threat of political instability looms in Asia and Africa, according to reports.
