Ankara’s political center shaken by suicide bomb attack

On an unfortunate Sunday, a suicide bomb attack caused panic around the Turkish Parliament in Ankara. According to the Interior Ministry, two attackers arrived in a commercial vehicle at around 12am (IST) and carried out a bomb attack “in front of the entrance of the Directorate General of Security of our Interior Ministry”.

One of the attackers detonated an explosive device, while security forces killed the other. During the attack, two police officers suffered minor injuries. At present, there is no information available regarding the identity or affiliation of the attackers. In particular, Kurdish and far-left militants and various groups including Islamic State have previously carried out deadly attacks across Turkey.

The incident occurred as Turkey’s parliament was preparing to reconvene after a three-month summer recess, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan scheduled to deliver an address. The parliamentary session is also important because it is expected to validate Sweden’s entry into the NATO alliance. Turkey, which had previously vetoed Sweden’s membership, indicated that despite earlier delays, ratification could occur during this parliamentary year. Relations between the two countries have been strained by Erdogan’s insistence on addressing Sweden’s desecration of the Quran.

History of Ankara attacks

The Turkish capital Ankara has seen several attacks in the past few years attributed to groups such as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Islamic State. The PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey and its Western allies, has been in conflict with the Turkish state since 1984. The latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing Turkey and the need for continued vigilance in the region.
