Eastern Coast of Japan on High Alert: Tsunami Advisory Issued Amidst Rising Tensions

Tsunami advisory for Izu Islands after magnitude 6.6 earthquake

Japan issued a tsunami advisory for the Izu Islands after a magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean near Torishima island in the Izu chain. The advisory issued on Thursday (October 5) urged residents to maintain a safe distance from beaches and river mouths. The epicenter was about 550 km (340 mi) south of Tokyo and struck around 11:00 a.m. at a depth of 10 km.

Surprise Tsunami Waves and Ongoing Earthquake Concerns

Tsunami waves of up to 30 cm were observed on at least one of the Izu islands following advisories. While earlier forecasts had predicted waves of about one meter for the remote island chain south of Tokyo, officials also stressed the potential dangers of the seemingly small tsunami waves. Coastal and riverside residents were advised to seek higher ground.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a series of offshore earthquakes in the area, the quakes were not felt in Tokyo or the islands. The meteorological agency warned of a 10-20% chance of possible aftershocks and an earthquake of similar intensity, putting residents on high alert for the coming week. According to the agency, seismic activity was observed in the western Pacific Ocean region last week.
