China’s Defense Minister Li Shangfu’s Disappearance Sparks U.S. Allegations and Global Controversy

Disappearance of Chinese Defense Minister remains a mystery amid speculation of leadership instability

The United States government has raised concerns over the whereabouts and condition of China’s Defense Minister Li Shangfu amid suspicions over an internal investigation and subsequent removal from his responsibilities. The uncertainty surrounding Lee’s condition increased when U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel revealed on social media that Lee “has not been seen or heard from for 3 weeks”, leading to speculation that he may face house arrest.

These developments add to a growing list of concerns regarding potential instability within Beijing‘s leadership. A few months ago, the sudden disappearance and subsequent removal of Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang had raised similar questions.

In an intriguing parallel, during the same period, China made a leadership change within its Rocket Force, which was responsible for managing the country’s nuclear arsenal. The former commander, Li Yuchao, had also disappeared from public view before his dismissal, with official explanations conspicuously absent.

Amid controversy over international engagement and sanctions, US claims to remove Li Shangfu remain shrouded in mystery

While the US government claims that Li Shangfu has been removed from his ministerial post, the exact basis for this conclusion is unclear, and the White House has avoided public comment on the matter. Lee’s recent international appearances, including a security conference in Russia and a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, contrast with his refusal to engage with U.S. counterparts until Washington censured him for his involvement in Russian military technology purchases in 2018.

Ambassador Emmanuel, a vocal critic of Chinese President Xi Jinping, has fueled further speculation by comparing the situation to an unfolding mystery: “President Xi’s cabinet lineup now resembles Agatha Christie’s novel “And Then There Were None”.
