China scraps COVID-19 Testing for Incoming Travellers

Starting this Wednesday, travelers traveling to China will be relieved of mandatory COVID-19 testing, China’s foreign ministry announced on Monday. This significant change reflects China’s progress toward re-engaging with the global community after nearly three years of isolation related to the pandemic.

The official website of the Chinese embassy clarified that travelers will no longer be required to provide negative test results when entering or leaving the country. Since January, China has been gradually easing its quarantine requirements for citizens returning from overseas trips, while also expanding the list of permitted travel destinations.

In a notable move, China has lifted restrictions on group tours to countries including the US, Australia, the UK, South Korea and Japan, facilitating outbound travel for its citizens. A US study has highlighted that China’s easing of its stringent COVID-19 measures allowed the virus to spread significantly, potentially causing nearly two million additional deaths in just two months.
