India’s space agency, ISRO has shared new pictures of the moon as its third lunar mission inched closer to the south pole. The images were captured by Chandrayaan-3‘s lander Vikram, which entered the final phase of its mission on Thursday.

Vikram, along with a rover, is scheduled to land near the South Pole on August 23. On Thursday, the lander separated from the propulsion module that brought it closer to the Moon. The new photos are in black and white and they zoom in on rocks and holes in the lunar surface.

Russia’s Luna-25

India’s Chandrayaan-3 and Russia’s Luna-25 are the two spacecraft to go to the lower side of the Moon. They both have to reach and land there next week. Luna-25, which is Russia’s first trip to the Moon since 1976, was sent into space last week. It’s about to do something really special by landing softly on the Moon on August 21 just a few days before the Indian mission.
