Azerbaijan launches “counter-terrorism” operation in Nagorno-Karabakh, vows to continue until surrender

Tensions have risen in the South Caucasus as Azerbaijan launched an “anti-terrorism” campaign in areas of Nagorno-Karabakh currently under ethnic-Armenian control. The move reignited a long-running dispute that had been simmering for months over the breakaway region recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan.

History of conflict

Azerbaijan and Armenia, former Soviet republics, first clashed in the early 1990s following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In 2020, Azerbaijan recaptured areas around Nagorno-Karabakh, leading to a ceasefire enforced by Russian peacekeepers. Azerbaijan has announced that its latest offensive will stop only with the unconditional surrender of “illegal Armenian military formations”. They demand the surrender of all weapons and the dissolution of the “illegal regime”.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has accused Azerbaijan of launching a campaign aimed at “ethnic cleansing”. Russian troops are evacuating civilians from Karabakh, and Armenia wants a ceasefire and talks. As the conflict intensifies, Russia’s involvement in Ukraine has become a distraction. The European Union and Russia have called for an immediate ceasefire. The blockade in Karabakh is posing increasing challenges to the vulnerable Armenian population.

Azerbaijan argues that it is not targeting civilians or civilian structures, but is focusing on “legitimate military targets” with precision weapons. They claim that the purpose of the operation is to disarm Armenian forces and secure their withdrawal. The escalation underscores the complexity of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, with historical tensions, territorial disputes, and converging international interests. The situation remains volatile, and hopes for a peaceful resolution hang in the balance.
