A powerful earthquake hits Afghanistan, killing more than 2,000 people and injuring 9,000

In a tragic turn of events, Afghanistan has been rocked by powerful earthquakes, killing more than 2,000 people and injuring more than 9,000, according to the Taliban administration. The disaster, occurring in a country accustomed to seismic activity, has become one of the deadliest in recent memory.

Death toll rises amid chaos

Initially, reports put the death toll at 500, as a Red Crescent spokesman announced on Sunday morning, with 16 deaths reported on Saturday night. However, as the situation unfolded, the numbers increased rapidly. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located 35 km (20 mi) northwest of Herat, registering a magnitude of 6.3.

Destruction and panic in Herat

Disaster Ministry spokesman Mullah Janan Saiq gave grim figures of 2,000 people killed, 9,240 injured and 1,329 houses damaged or destroyed. More than 200 dead arrived at Herat hospitals, mainly women and children. The earthquakes caused widespread panic, with people taking to the streets and taking shelter in military bases and hospitals, fearing aftershocks.
